Tang Taizong, founder and Second Emperor
of Tang Dynasty
In the fifth year of Zheguang, Taizong, the
most important emperor of the Tang Dynasty,
was recorded to have said the following on
the subject of happiness:

“A great man (Daijiangfu) would be truly
happy if he could achieve the following three
things in his lifetime –
• To provide for his family in a land free
of wars
• To have animals that are well-fed,
meadows that are green,
and hunting conducted within certain rites,
and no arrow
