翹頭案 (Qiao Tau On). The Chinese term “Qiao Tau On” is used to refer to a specific style of table that has a flange that curved upward on both of the short sides.

This style of table is often referred to in English as “altar table”  This is, in fact, a misnomer.

Qiao Tau On is traditionally used in important rooms to project the aura of dignity and elegance.   This large table with everted flanges is made of wood but the surface of the wood is artistically carved to simulate bamboo. One of the reasons that the simulated bamboo look was popular in ancient China is because bamboo is used as a symbol for the upright character of a Confucian gentleman.

The table top is made of a solid wood plank and the flanges are decorated with a simple Ruyi (wishes come true) motif in relief.

Underneath the table top. the wood is carved to resemble to two bamboo posts stacked up. The upper one is further decorated with leaves.

The spandrels are decorated with images of thunder scrolls  in open carved style.  The aprons are strengthened with six short struts.

The panel legs rest on very ornate bases that are fully decorated with images of pines, bamboo and Ruyi.  The frames of the panel legs are carved to simulate three strands of bamboo with leaves.  The leg panels are done in open carved style  with images pines and deers and cranes to suggest the three most desirable things of mortality: a good life , wealth and longevity.
