Bronze drums of this kind are found exclusively in archaeological sites in the provinces of Guangxi and Yunan in south-western China, as well as in the northern part of Vietnam. Additionally, the time span of these drums is very long, running from the Warring States period (481 BCE- 221 BCE) to the Yuan period (1271-1368).
This archaeological information suggests that this type of bronze drum is unique to this region. The decorative patterns on the drumming surface of this particular drum include the geometric patterns representing the sun with four frog images positioned evenly on the outer rounds of the sun patterns.
The body of the drum is decorated with simple geometric patterns. On either side of the upper section, there is ring suggesting something like a rope might go around the drum when it is used. The fine craftsmanship of the drum is testimony to the superb bronze-making techniques developed at the time.
