A pair of red lacquer compound cabinets.
A compound cabinet refers to a cabinet that has a detachable chest that sits on top of the cabinet. This pair has been well preserved with its origin lacquer finishes.
The top chest has a mitred frame and the doors have extended tenons that fit perfectly into the mortises built in the frame allowing the door to open and close freely. The chest has a waist that is decorated with three engraved symbolic begonia. Below the waist is the base which is decorated with engraved curves which cusped in the middle. The interior is divided into two parts with a wooden shelf. The cabinet has a standard mitred frame with an ornate from apron that is decorated with relief carvings. The doors have extended tenons which fit into the mortises of the frame allowing the doors to sit securely as well as to open and close comfortably.
The interior has 3 storage spaces and two drawers. The exterior of the doors is decorated with two half oval shaped metal plates. When the doors are closed, the two halves form a complete oval. On each of the half oval is a protruding loop and a leaf shaped pull. When the doors are closed, a pin or a lock can be inserted into the loops.
